Hampta Pass Trek

A dramatic valley crossover through the Himalayas

About this trek

Hampta Pass is a stunning crossover trek connecting the lush Kullu valley to the stark, moon-like landscape of Lahaul. The contrast is dramatic — one side is green and forested, the other is barren and high-altitude. This trek is considered one of the best moderate treks in Himachal Pradesh.

Day-by-day itinerary

Drive from Manali to Jobra (3,150 m), the trek starting point. Trek through pine forests along the Rani Nala stream. Reach Chika campsite (3,350 m) by evening.

Cross the tree line and enter open meadows. Trek to Balu ka Ghera (3,810 m), a wide flat ground surrounded by rocky peaks. Overnight camp.

The most dramatic day. Ascend to Hampta Pass (4,270 m) — the landscape transforms completely. Descend steeply to Shea Goru in the Lahaul valley.

Trek to Chatru and drive to Chandratal lake (optional) or directly drive back to Manali.

Drive back from Chatru/Chandratal to Manali. Trip ends.
